Nigeria preparation for Afcon 2021 has been dealt a blow after SSC Napoli made it known on their official website that Victor Osimhen has tested positive for the virus and he has been self-isolating.

Victor Osimhen is expected to lead the attacking line of the Super eagles in Cameroon. However, that may not be the case at least for the first two games against Egypt and Sudan after the forward has reportedly tested positive to Covid in an official statement released on Napoli website.

Consequently, Osimhen has been self-isolating per local authorities regulations, and he will continue to do so for fourteen days, though he is asymptomatic.

The 23-year old has been phenomenon so far this season, scoring 5 crucial goals in 11 appearances.  He also played an important role in Nigeria qualification for Afcon 2021 and qualification for FIFA 2022 world cup playoffs.

Before this covid fiasco, Osimhen was on the list of Africa players that could miss the Africa cup of Nations due to a facial injury he suffered, following a clash of heads with Inter Milan defender, Milan Škriniar, in a Serie A game.

However, he was included in Nigeria final Afcon squad list after the player declared himself 100% fit. He was due to be away for three months per Napoli assessment, but surprisingly, the 23-year old was back in training after 16 days with a custom carbon mask to shield his face.

That shows Osimhen determination to represent his fatherland in Cameroon, but unfortunately he faces another challenge following his positive covid test.

This is not a good news for the player and the country.  If he happens to miss the opening games against Egypt and Sudan, Nigeria boasts of superior attacking options in Ighalo, Slavia Prague’s Peter Olayinka, Leicester city’s Iheanacho, to lead the Super Eagles attacking line.
