Get to Know the New Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the appointment of Jose Peserio as the new Nigeria Coach, a look at his records and stats.

The Former Venezuela coach underachieved for both countries and clubs he coached. His major achievement was at SC Braga with Champions League group stage qualification, UEFA Super Cup runner-up and the Portuguese league cup. He failed to qualify Saudi Arabia for the 2010 world cup in South Africa and failed to coach Venezuela past the 2021 Copa América group stage in his international coaching career.  He has managed 362 matches so far with 175 wins, 81 draws, and 106 defeats. The 61-yeard old won just five honours from 1999 till date. He won the Egyptian Super league, Portuguese second division, Portuguese league cup, AF Madeira Cup, and UEFA Cup, runner-up.

Jose Peserio Biography

Jose Peserio was born on April 4, 1960, in Coruche, Santarem District, Portugal. He was a former player and a coach. He played his football career entirely in the Portuguese league, in Sport Lisboa Cartaxo, S.C.U. Torreense, Amora FC, GD Samora Correia, and Clube Oriental de Lisboa. Peserio never played above the Segunda liga, which is Portugal second division league.

Coaching Career

His coaching career began in the fourth division Portuguese league União de Santarém, as the role of player-coach. He coached several clubs in the third and fourth divisions of the Portuguese league for eight years.

But his major success was in C.D. Nacional in 1999. He won the Segunda Divisao league and AF Madeira cup and after 3 seasons they were promoted to the Primeira Liga- the highest football league in Portugal and achieve an 11th place finish in the 2002-2003 season.

In 2003, he joined Carlos Queiroz to assist him in Real Madrid. Unfortunately, Real Madrid performed poorly, finishing 4th place in the league. The du0 were sacked, and Carlos Joined Man Utd as assistant coach, while Peserio was appointed manager of Sporting Lisbon for the 2004-2005 season.

He coached sporting CP to a third-place finish with 4 points behind the league leaders, Benfica. In addition, he was able to coach the team to Europa League qualification, where they finish runner-up.

Jose coach continues his coaching career with Panathinaikos FC, FC Rapid București, Romanian club without winning any honours. He was later appointed Saudi Arabia coach, where he failed to qualify Saudi Arabia for the 2010 world cup finals in South Africa.

On June 3, 2012, he became Braga coach and guided them to a Champions League group stage qualification, the second in their history.

He also won the Portuguese league cup for Braga also ranks fourth in the league, in the same campaign. Despite that, Jose reached a mutual agreement with Braga to terminate the contract.

Peserio was appointed coach of Al-Wahda in 2013 and was later appointed coach of Al-Ahly in 2015, which the fans protested due to Peserio’s poor resume. However, he coached the team to win the Egyptian super league before he was relieved of his duties in 2016.

He returned to Portugal, which was another unsuccessful coaching spell.

He had an unsuccessful spell with Porto and Braga, both clubs firing the Portuguese manager after a poor performance. In 2017, he signed for Sharjah FC and was sacked after 9 months after a poor start to the season.

Jose later signed for Vitória S.C. but left before the end of the contract in 2019 on a mutual agreement. He returned to Braga in July 2018 but was later sacked due to poor performance.

Also, he was appointed coach of Venezuela on February 4, 2020. He led the team, to Copa América 2021, but the team was eliminated after two draws and two wins. Then, he later resigned in August after being owed a year salary due to the country’s economic-financial crisis.

Jose Peserio has managed a total number of 17 clubs (Assistant at Real Madrid in 2003) and two national teams. Nigeria will be his third national team. He uses 4-2-3-1  formation. He has managed 362 matches so far with 175 wins, 81 draws and 106 defeats.
